Why is this the first thing they change?

Why is that when ever new car models out, the first thing they change is the headlights? I mean everything else on the car looks almost the same except the headlights. For example, a 2002 PT Cruiser looks the same as a 2008 model, except a slight difference in the shape of the headlights. Another thing I noticed were the cars that are similar, but has another name and manufacturer. As the trucks like GMC Sierra Chevy Silverado, Ford Fusion looks like a Mercury Milan. Mercury Mariner looks like a Ford Escape. I can not say with certainty, but every time I see the 350 sports car Nissan Z, I can not help but see a lightness of a Porsche 911. I first looked at the body of a Z 350 and that of a Porsche, especially the rear and side view of two cars and they seem quite similar to me somehow.

I think you are talking about changes to a car after it was redesigned. The headlights and taillights are some of the first things you notice on a car and they are things that differentiate brands and models of other cars brands and models. That is why most of the redesign is seen in the headlights and taillights. Other "invisible" changes could be in safety and effectiveness of areas which are then presented to the public as the announcement in the form of brochures for the cars.
